Reaching Global Audiences: An Introduction to Foreign Rights for Authors

A practical guide to navigating translation deals, contracts, and international markets.

I’m currently finalizing a comprehensive guide for authors who want to approach foreign rights independently, but with clarity, strategy, and long-term vision. This guide expands on the topics introduced in my recent talk and goes deeper into the practical decisions authors face in real publishing situations.

A few topics this Guide covers

  • How foreign rights and translation deals actually work

  • How to respond to inquiries from foreign publishers

  • How to evaluate offers and understand key contract terms

  • Practical examples of negotiation scenarios

  • How to prepare your book for international licensing

  • When to handle foreign rights independently—and when to seek professional help

  • ...and so much more!

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is written for authors who take their work seriously and want to make informed decisions about international publishing.

  • Traditionally published authors navigating contract decisions

  • Self-published authors managing their own rights

  • Authors who have received (or expect to receive) foreign inquiries

  • Mission-driven authors seeking thoughtful international reach

What This Guide Is Not

  • It is not a promise of instant international success

  • It does not offer shortcuts or guaranteed outcomes

  • It is not written for authors seeking quick or speculative results

Why I’m Writing This Guide

After four years of hands-on work in foreign rights acquisitions and licensing, collaborating closely with publishers, agents, and authors, I decided to put into writing what I had learned along the way—and what I wish I had found when I first transitioned into foreign rights work. I realized that many authors face important licensing decisions without a clear framework or a reliable reference point, and that this gap often leads to uncertainty or missed opportunities.

This guide grew directly out of that experience. It is designed as a practical, experience-based resource—one that authors can return to whenever real questions arise, grounded not in theory, but in the realities of international publishing.
